Gail Richardson CPS, Diversity Trainer – Diversity Good for America

Today Black Star News Columnist Phil Andrews will be featuring article by Gail Richardson, CPS, and Diversity Trainer – Diversity Good for America.

It just so happened that I went for a job interview and my prospective employer was a Hasidic Jew. I eagerly extended my hand for a handshake and was greeted by a nod and offer to be seated. All kinds of thoughts went through my mind. Of course, the first was prejudice. Does this man have a problem because I’m black or because I’m a woman?

It wasn’t until after the interview and I was offered the job that someone explained to me that it was against his religion to touch a woman other than his wife. Surprise, surprise and I thought he didn’t like me!

In preparation for a missionary trip to Africa I was informed that African men would not conduct business with a woman. I took the advice and surrounded myself with men who were coached to conduct the business for me when we arrived in Kenya. Once again, the African men who met us at the hotel were not impressed by the cover that I had devised. They specifically asked for the woman who was in charge of the mission. Sheepishly I relinquished my disguise as secretary for these men and took my rightful position as the leader of the mission. These ministers were advised by our liaison that the real leader was a woman. It did not matter to them with whom they conducted business as long as it was accomplished.

It is extremely important for the creation of a productive work atmosphere that the employees become knowledgeable of their cultural differences. Tolerance is the product of understanding. I cannot comprehend what I do not know.

How many misunderstandings, firings, demotions and such may have been avoided if diversity was taught as part of employee training? I’m sure the number is astronomical! Let’s make it a point to do something about it. There are many others, like myself who make it our life’s job to conduct workplace seminars and present inspirational messages and keynote speeches that urge us to embrace our differences and create a true rainbow coalition that brings the best of each of us into our workplace environment.

Let us take a page from the late Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and judge one another by the content of our character, not the color of our skin, the place of our birth or our choice of religion. Why can’t we all just get along? To contact Gail Richardson for speaking engagements email prepare2bmarried@aol.com

Power Networking Secrets – Giver’s Gain by Phil Andrews

Power Networking Secrets – Giver’s Gain

Successful Power Net workers live by the concept of “Giver’s Gain”. If you help enough people get what they want you will automatically get what you want. Giver’s gain is rooted in a fundamental law of the universe “If you sow sparingly, you shall also reap sparingly. Getting without giving always goes against the fundamental grain of the great universe.

Successful Power Net workers are extremely good listeners. It is extremely hard to live by the principle “Givers Gain” if you possess poor listening skills. Givers get involved in productive networking situations which they can cultivate the Givers Gain” philosophy. The universe is constantly rewarding the efforts of givers by attracting the people, places, and things that they need for their survival into their life. Our lives are intertwined; when we help others succeed we increase the capacity to become our best self.

Give of your best to the world, and the world will give the best back to you. Givers never stop practicing the principle “Givers Gain” for they have indoctrinated this principle into their belief system. Learn to give more than you can take, and you will see the law of increase in your life. Find ways to help others in life, and your bounty will be increased one hundred times over.

An old Christian Hymn states “The more you give, the more he gives to you. It is really true, so just keep on giving”. It is really true so just keep on giving. Power Net workers bring something to the table, and have earned a right to go away from the table with new new-found blessings. Nothing from nothing leaves nothing. Giving has many forms, and is very often very inexpensive. Give of your friendship, talent, knowledge, and time.

Ask others how you may be of assistance to them to reach their goals. Help expand people in your network capacity to meet others, by being a link to positive connections in your circle of influence. You know the rule “Think of others, and they will invariably think of you”. Remember that Universal Law is predictable. Study Great Givers, for success always leaves clues.

Dollars & Sense (Financial Goal-Setting for African-Americans by Phil Andrews

Dollars & Sense (Financial Goal-Setting for African-Americans by Mr. Phil Andrews

Financial Goal-Setting for African-Americans Financial management for African-Americans must be centered around goals. What gets measured in life gets done. A goal is not a goal until it is set and a plan gets underway for its achievement. Time is one of our greatest allies along with faith in God. Now is the best time to start your financial goals. The first goal should be to become financially literate. Knowledge is Power. The old saying reinforces this concept, “a fool and his money are soon departed”.

The first ritual of wealth is to set a goal to pay yourself first, no matter how small the amount. Financial success is as much about discipline, character, and integrity as it is about large sums of money. In the financial world, small advantages have a way of adding up. How much value would you put on a sound financial education?

In the book Rich Dad Poor Dad, it is taught that we must acquire education, experience, and then we acquire excessive cash. Each of us has different goals, and our financial plan should cater to those goals.

We should develop a healthy passion for the financial goals we set which should be reinforced by our daily actions. Tithing, savings, and investing should be a ritual in our lives. A sense of stewardship over our resources is the highest way of dealing with our God-Giving blessing.

Financial goal-setting requires that we give a good accounting of our cash flow. The age-old adage that “As a man thinketh so shall he be” and “all that he achieves is a direct result of his own thinking. The cry of all of humanity should be higher yet! How many individuals in our community know the power of compound interest, but does that number equate to that number that follows its principles? Financial goal-setting requires that we develop a philosophy of success and achievement.

A millionaire once said that “Everyday that I find a penny , it is one day that I do not have to work for it”.

Do you value the pennies, nickels, dimes, and dollars that flow through your hands? The rich get richer because respect and proper use of money attracts more money. If you need verification of this fact, just analyze the mentality of a spender verses an investor. The investor says don’t spend your last dollar until you know where your next dollar is coming from, the spender spends everything and looks for money.

The richest man in Babylon's goal was to keep a part of all the money he made. Saving a part of all the money you make is said to be a secret, because so few people follow its principles but profess to know its premise. Knowing and doing are opposite sides of the same coin, but real financial power is gained through action. Remember it’s not what you make, it’s what you keep. It’s not what you know it’s what you do. It’s not what you are it’s what you become, what you become will determine what you make!

Winners are not born, they are made. The top 3% of all financially successful people are goal-setters, a financial plan and goals are the roadmap for an upwardly mobile African-American community.Remember, time is one of your most precious allies. A journey of a thousand miles begins with one step. May you reach all of your financial, mental, physical, and spiritual goals with God’s speed. Let’s do it!

Who has Time for Success? You Do…When You Follow 5 Success Principles by Dr. Emma Etuk, Ph.D.

Who has Time for Success? You Do…When You Follow 5 Success Principles by Dr. Emma Etuk, Ph.D.
(PRLEAP.COM) Contact: Debert Cook, CMPPublicistPhone: 212.571.6559, ext. 11Email: debertcook@aol.comWho Has Time For Success? You Do…When You Follow 5 Success Principles by Dr. Emma Etuk, Ph.D.Most people claim that they want to be “successful,” yet few know what kind of success they desire or how to achieve it. They wish their lives were “the profiles of success” or that they could “make it a winning life,” but they have no clue how to turn that desire into reality. Realize that what you do today has a direct impact on whether you’ll be successful in life later. How you manage your time, plan your goals, and take action will make or break your future. Unfortunately, between 40+ hour work weeks, the push to “do more in less time,” and increasing personal and business obligations, few people actually make the time to follow their dreams. Instead, they resign themselves to their unsuccessful habits of the past, and then wonder why they can’t make any progress. The fact is that many people do not succeed in life because they think they do not have the time to be successful or to follow success principles. But we all have the same number of hours per day. Oprah Winfrey and Bill Gates, two of the richest and most successful people in the world, do not have an extra number of hours in the day, yet they have achieved more than most people can imagine. The only difference between them and the masses is that they made the time for success and followed proven success principles. You can, too. The following guidelines will help.1. Know what kind of success you desire.Just saying you want to be “successful” is fruitless. It’s non-specific and causes you to waste your time in multiple pursuits. The key is to focus on the specific kind of success you want. Six varieties of success exist: a) Economic success: the desire to make money and accumulate wealth. b) Political success: the desire for political fame, power, and influence.c) Social success: the desire to change the world for the better and to be known as a social reformer, philanthropist, and benefactor.d) Intellectual success: the desire to gain knowledge and be able to unravel the mysteries behind certain ideas. e) Spiritual success: the desire for complete spiritual fulfillment.f) Physical success: the desire for inner and outer beauty or athletic superiority.Obviously, each success category has positive and negative aspects. For example, someone with a desire for economic success can use his or her money for good deeds, or can cross the line to greed. The key is to know the kind of success you desire and then focus your time on the positive aspects of that desire. Those who are truly successful take the time to define the exact success they want and what they will do with it. They create their vision for the future and devote time to attaining that vision each day.2. Get your act together. To be successful, you must take the time to organize yourself and your life. Realize that success does not chase after a disorganized individual. Being organized or getting your act together means doing the right things in the right order. In other words, you must take the time to prioritize your daily activities so you focus on what will truly make you successful. Unfortunately, our modern array of gadgets and technology do not help people simplify or organize their life. While television, the Internet, and cell phones are tools that can aid us in achieving our goals, if not used properly, they can add to an already information overload, thus making it difficult to carve out time each day to dedicate to our individual goals. To truly get your act together, you must start with the internal, which involves setting priorities and committing to them. Once that internal organization is complete, the external process is somewhat easier, which includes cleaning up the clutter in your life, scheduling, time management, and manifesting the outward qualities of persistence and commitment. Only then can you plan and follow your route for success. 3. Respect your time.To the degree that you appreciate and respect time is the degree to which you will succeed. If you abuse time, you will surely fail and regret your lack of discipline. In fact, no one can truly succeed without a proper attitude towards time. We each have 24 hours per day, 168 hours per week, and 8,736 hours per year to devote to our dreams, so we all must schedule our time wisely. For example, if you were to sleep 56 hours per week, play for 42 hours, work for 70 hours, and earn $10 per hour, you are likely to earn $36,400 per year. In 20 years, you’d have earned over $700,000. If you save only 10% of that, you’d have $70,000 sitting in the bank. Realize that most people work for more than 20 years during their lifetime, and that $700,000 does not include bonuses, salary increases, pensions, 401K plans, overtime, gifts, or interest from investments. Now, would you consider yourself unsuccessful today if you had at least $70,000 in the bank? Probably not. The point is to schedule your time and your life so you’re devoted to success 100% of the time. Think long-term and plan everything. The small time infraction you make today may seem small, but the small things add up, compound over time, and affect us profoundly. 4. Be single-minded.People who are successful devote their time to mastering the one most important detail that will lead them to the type of success they ultimately desire. To be single-minded means you:a) Are not easily distracted;b) Have your eyes set on the prize;c) Devote your time to your purpose;d) Have a driving ambition;e) Are determined;f) Are dedicated;g) Have a singularity of purpose. Most people start something but never complete it because they get distracted. The distraction may have been a phone call, a negative criticism, a word of discouragement from a so-called friend, or a personal fear that we may fail. In order to not let distractions interfere with your success, you must enhance your quality of single-mindedness, which means you devote your time to one pursuit for one endeavor, not break your time up among many activities or goals. Don’t be a “jack of all trades and master of none.” Stand up for one thing and go for it consistently. 5. Cultivate a proper work habit. If you intend to succeed in life, you must cultivate a proper work habit. You must make up your mind that no substitute for hard work exists. Cutting corners to save time on your journey will only delay you in the end. No matter what anyone promises you, when you work less time or less productively, you produce lower volume of goods and services. But if you have a proper work habit, you produce and achieve more. In the end, your attitude towards work reflects your attitude towards life and your propensity to succeed or fail. How do you cultivate a proper work habit? Realize that a proper work habit involves a change in your mental attitude. If you love to work, then you will likely succeed. If you don’t love your current work, then find a profession or cause that excites you. When your work is enjoyable, you will commit more time to it and will succeed. The Time is Right for SuccessConsider today what you really want to be remembered for – what type of success you desire. Dedicate and rededicate yourself, your time, and your energy to this one pursuit, cause, or ambition for the rest of your life. Do not give up or rest until you reach your goal. Only then will you attain true success and leave a lasting legacy to the world. Online Bookstore Cbbooksdistribution.com opens Two Bookstores in Queens

Queens, New York - January 17, 2004 - Online Bookstore Cbbooksdistribution.com opens two bookstores in Queens. C&B BOOKS was started in 1995 by Carol Rogers & Brenda Piper. C&B Books Distribution recently opened its first physical location at the Jamaica Market 90-40 160th, Street Jamaica, New York.

C&B BOOKS was started in 1995 by Carol Rogers & Brenda Piper. C&B Books Distribution recently opened its first physical location at the Jamaica Market 90-40 160th, Street Jamaica, New York. The Grand Opening of the second store located at 75-25 Parson's Blvd., Flushing, NY was held on January 8, 2004.

The bookstores will carry a variety of multicultural books and host self-published and published author books signings. Two years ago we started the C&B Book's online club. The club has grown immensely. The motivation behind this book business was the lack of affordable books written by African American authors. We decided to become an asset to our Youth and the community as a whole. We offer our books for less than the major distributors.

We knew this would provide our readers with a wide variety of reading materials. We carry titles for all ages and cultures. We stock titles in all categories, fiction, nonfiction, spiritual and inspirational etc. We became known as the Book ladies of Queens. The customers would flock to us, requesting titles never complaining about the book cost, they knew that we would give them the best deals. We sold books at St. Nicholas for the next two years. Our last year was during the Christmas season, we went to St. Nicholas to sell our books at their Christmas Holiday indoor market.

We began to setup the books, when a nice woman approached us and asked us, "Did we carry any books written by African American authors? We being the business smart women that we are (smile) replied, "Which titles are you interested in? She told us she would return with a list. Caroline & I will always be grateful to Ms. Betty Miller Mason; she is the reason that we became Booksellers. When we asked Betty if we could mention her name in this writing, she was elated. Betty we want the world to know that people like you are the reason that we are successful African American Book sellers.

Betty Miller Mason from the bottom of our hearts we thank you for your inspiration and our first African American Book Sale. Caroline was so excited that someone was interested in African American books, and very impressed with the large order for African American books, she was determined not only get these books, but to offer the books at the same discount. Our customers were all races, ages, and from all walks of life. Some became our friends and others came just to visit or place their order.

You may wonder why we attracted so many people. The reason that we attracted so many loyal friends and customers was due to our concern for their satisfaction and happiness, not just their dollars. Children have always been our specialty, so whether the parent could afford a book or not, we never let a child leave without a book, on us. Our children are the future, and reading will offer them that future. We have never denied any child a book and we never will. In 1997 after we left the St. Nicholas flea market. Carol and I ventured street vendors business.

We began setting up in all five boroughs of New York; we worked out a schedule, for each place of business. We set up shop in front of various companies that would allow vendors to sell. People came from everywhere; our nickname, "The Book Ladies of Queens" became very popular we certainly were in demand. We beat the odds, bad weather, hot days, long hours, every weekend; nothing stopped us from getting books into the communities. Yes, we wanted to gain profit and we still do. However the real reward is when you can provide books for all the people who want them.

In 2000, we decided to sell books from home. We set up a mail order service in-house. We really wanted an Internet service but weren't educated in that area. We researched and educated ourselves about the Internet business.

It wasn't until February 2002, that our dream became a reality. We were contacted by Mr. Phil Andrews, Public Relations Director, and a member of the 100 Black Men of America. He encouraged us to build a website and put the books on the Internet. We didn't feel that we were ready to take on a venture that large. Caroline was not as unsure about the Internet business as I was. Eventually they both won me over. We began to build the site. Phil Andrews joined C&B Books Distribution Center as our Public Relations Director on March 1st, 2002.

During her research, Caroline contacted a web-designer and asked her to take a look at out our site. Diane of Difs Web-Design, came to us with a site that we couldn't refuse. She continues to keep up our site. We also promote -- host signings for self-published authors -- visit the author's gallery. On October 1, 2004, we held the Grand Opening of our first store - Visit our bookstore at the Jamaica Market located at 90-40 160th Street, Jamaica, New York.

Simone Kelly: President/CEO Gots To Have It Marketing

Simone Kelly: President/CEO Gots To Have It Marketing

Simone Kelly dishes tips to business owners

Here are some pointers to help prevent you from living back at Mom's in your old room. a) Get your business plan together. This goes hand in hand with Fear number one: Failure. Because the more you have dissected what you need to do, the more realistic things will be for you. b) Get your Side-Hustle going! Start small with projects after work and on weekends. You can test the waters to see if your business is even worth expanding. A slow transition is key.
I recently conducted a survey asking my colleagues to identify their biggest fears when thinking about starting a business or running their business. Thefollowing are the top three fears that resulted from my survey and some ways to combat them. 1. Fear of Failure: But of course it's the most obvious. Unfortunately, the reality is that 30-50% of start-ups fail for various reasons that are not always because of poor sales. However, there are some basic ways to get over failing, if you plan ahead for the good times and bad: a) Know your strengths and weaknesses. People who fear inadequacy sometimes try to do everything to perfection. Yeah, you control freaks out there know who you are! LOL. You must realize what your talents are and then get help where you're lacking. b) Identify the many pitfalls that others have had and learn how to avoid them. It can't be said enough. Know your competitors and find a good mentor! 2. Fear of Insufficient Cash Flow -AKA- Going Broke! Your need for start-up money is the reason why you shouldn't storm out of your dull 9 to 5 just yet. Sure, you might hate your job, but think about it as the contributor to your "lay-away plan for escape". Realize you're probably going to spend more money than you make that first year in business. Know your monthly budget and save accordingly. Each paycheck you get from your job and side-hustle, stash away a chunk for your "lay-away plan for escape". You should have at least 6-12 months saved, so that you can keep that roof over your head and food in your belly! 3. Lack of stability: One of the main reasons people leave their 9 to 5s is because they are bored to tears with the monotony. You can almost expect to be shaken into a world of change when you are in business for numero uno. But I for one think that's what makes it so exciting. Routine is what many are escaping. You'll be free to call your own shots, and instability is something that might even be welcomed. Be able to adapt to change: With every turn in today's unpredictable business environment you need to be able to change directions quickly and always have a plan B! Entrepreneurs, who are aware of change today and successfully adapt to it, will emerge as the leaders of tomorrow! Surviving Job Lost in America - never get laid off again!

Surviving Job Lost in America - never get laid off again!
by John Raye

If you still have a 9 to 5 and have never been laid off or downsized, consider yourself blessed. You are among the fortunate few.

In the coming years, or months, just about everyone working today will likely experience some on-the-job turbulence. For some, it will amount to nothing more than a mild disturbance, perhaps a new assignment or new supervisors.

This will not be the case, however, for the majority of working class folk who will soon experience that awful feeling that comes with being fired.

I have been fired, laid off or downsized more times than I care to remember. It is an empty, painful, unforgettable experience that can cause permanent emotional damage. It is most difficult for men, and especially Black men who come into the workplace already burdened down with past issues, deep hurts and lingering disappointments.

The greatest danger comes, however, when a man becomes defined by his job, title or position. Lose either one, and such a man is soon swallowed up in chaos and confusion. Overnight, he can become a mental train wreck, a helpless, pathetic soul wandering around lost, in a noisy mess created in the darkness of his own mind.

Some people go crazy because they lose their jobs. Some lose the will to live; others simply give up and walk away, broken and disjointed; forever disconnected from the human family. Nothing is more painful or pathetic than to encounter a man with a broken spirit. It is a most pitiful sight, closely akin to an undernourished dog too weary to eat even when food is offered.
I have seen once strong, able-bodied men reduced to shameless hucksters and shuffling derelicts all because their jobs and self-esteem disappeared at the same time. Even worse, and most unfortunate, some men haven taken the ultimate step in self-destruction by killing themselves.
No matter how important, no job is worth losing your mind, your wife or your life!

Declare Your Self Worth

When you get laid off or fired, and noticed I said, when and not if… move quickly to control your emotions or else your emotions will control you. Your mind can, will often jump time, and run ahead of you. Many times this leads to a loss of focus and personal initiative. In order to avoid such a catastrophe, you must become an instant master of positive self-talk. You must begin to affirm and declare your own self-worth. Keep a close check on your emotional temperature by focusing on the positive, not the loss of your job. Losing a job is a negative reality, so do not focus on loss. Focus on success…and on winning.

Waste no time in defending or explaining your condition or situation to family or friends. It’s your business, so do not make it theirs. Be upfront when asked about your situation. And while you need not go around volunteering information, do not run and hide. State the facts and move on. Make no apologies, and do not vent or showcase anger or resentment. Take the high road. Do not engage in second-guessing with yourself, and above all, do not harm yourself. You’ve committed no crime, you’ve done nothing wrong, so let all that guilt and melancholy expressions slide straight off your backside.

Stay Active

Getting fired means you have been wounded; you have taken a direct hit but neither is fatal unless you make it so. Allow yourself time to cry, to feel down, to become emotional…but only for a moment. It’s alright to feel down and depressed, but you cannot stay in this condition forever. Fortify your mind with grand thoughts of power, of plenty and prosperity. Put some fire in your imagination; take action! In your mind, declare yourself unstoppable!

Your physical health is directly tied to your mental health. Therefore, do not sit and pout! Stay active! Run, walk, hike, skip, hop or jump rope---create some physical activity that will keep both your body and mind functional. Worrying is useless and a waste of precious time and energy. Find a hobby, volunteer or go work part-time, attend meetings or do anything that will keep you from sitting around the house in a deep funk.

Life is too good and too short for any of us to spend time worrying about losing a job.
Inside your head is a brain; it is there to be used. It is the most powerful tool given to mankind. Surely, we have the capacity to make a job if we cannot find one!

Become Better or Become Bitter

My firing from a high profile job left a long, bitter taste in my mouth. Instead of becoming better, I became bitter, much to my own detriment. In my early career, I struggled mightily to make the grade as a television anchorman.

Though I worked extremely hard, too hard some would later say, I was ill-prepared for the rigors of daily television journalism. I simply lacked the experience, the training, the exposure, and educational background to play in the big leagues.

What I lacked in education and training however, was made up in hustle and sheer determination. But that wasn’t enough and my politics as a “cause or movement man” certainly didn’t help my case either. Unknowingly, I became involved in acts of self-sabotage. Unchecked anger can mess up or sidetrack anyone’s career which is why you must always keep a close eye on your emotions.

Being one of the first Black television anchors in the early 70’s was big time news for a recognition-starved Black community. Those of us who cracked the TV color line in the late 60’s and early 70’s became instant, overnight heroes. I adjusted but was never comfortable in the unsought role of community leader or spokesperson. I was thrust into that position only because of my anchor position on television.

Therefore, I became a reluctant celebrity, hounded relentlessly for autographs, money, gifts, and all kind of favors and requests wherever I went. My fall from the promise land of opportunity was long and hard. For a long time, I was mad, and I do mean, really mad!

Its safe to say that while I suffered much emotional trauma, I managed, nevertheless, to land on my feet largely because of an intact knowledge of self-worth. My television anchor position did not define my true nature. And I refuse to beg for my job. Deep in my gut, I knew the difference between truth and falsehood. I knew my so-called celebrity resulted mostly from the TV, a deceptive, artificial instrument of mass confusion; it did not reflect my true nature. I knew you could put a chicken or a frog in the same anchor position, and both would soon become instant celebrities also.

Time Heals Everything

In my day, reality television did not exist and thanks to a solid background in character education, I managed to survive both segregation and the hellish conditions that follow it. I did not lose my mind, and did not compromise my integrity, either. I knew exactly who I was, and was very comfortable with my background. I never felt ashamed of my condition or surroundings. For sure, I didn’t like those conditions but I would not hate or dislike myself because of poor living conditions. In my community, poverty was an equal opportunity resident. Everybody had a whole lot of nothing!

But being fired, however, left me dazed and severely shaken. I had some real low moments, some painful moments of serious doubt and uncertainty but giving up was never an option.
When you have no job, no money, and no prospects of getting any, your mind can really start messing with you! I survived, for example, several bouts with depression, and all kind of crazy thoughts went through my head. But, I held on. I got tired but I wouldn’t quit; I wouldn’t give up! The demons tried but couldn’t get me!

Make Use Of Your Secret Weapon

And truth be told, it is only by grace that I am still here! And I need to say this also; I prayed a whole lot! When you can’t do anything else and don’t know what to do; be still and pray! Prayer is your trump card, your ace of spades; it will always bring you through! Always know it is your secret weapon!

It took a good five years for me to heal myself. Instead of staying bitter, I worked on getting better. You cannot get bitter and better at the same time. One or the other must prevail, and so I decided that feeling better was much better than feeling bitter. I had more energy when I felt better, less energy when I felt bitter. And time, I can happily report, heals all wounds. Time enabled me to outgrow my bitterness.

Let Go Of Stuff And Mess

I’ve learn to let go of things that are beyond my control. I stay clear of stuff and mess. I remove myself from messy situations, and erase mess and messed up people from my consciousness. Most of all, I did not, and will not, allow my past to become a prisoner in my future.

I accept as fact that some degree of stuff and mess will always show up in our lives. This is a given, but stuff and mess should never consume our every waking moment. Much of it can be eliminated or reduced simply by recognizing it for what it is; stuff and mess!

When you live a life based on purpose and principle, you never need worry about being laid off or dismissed because a purpose-driven man will always find another opportunity. When you begin to move, act and live in your true purpose, your life takes on an entirely new meaning. The universe opens up and responds to your every need.

For example, when one door of opportunity is closed, another opens automatically and immediately, but only for the individual whose level of emotional maturity is such that he knows where to look. Sudden adversity forces the average person to look outside for help. Shell-shocked and griped by fear, he quickly succumbs to the demons of doubt and uncertainty, not realizing that all security, all success and all prosperity are to be found within. And real power, like real success, also originates from within.

When touched by adversity, most people are too shook up to consider the relevancy of self-employment. However, self-employment is a good thing because self-employed people do not allow themselves to be laid off or downsized. More and more, our knowledge-based economy is giving way to self-employed individuals. Self-employment, in fact, is the hallmark of the new marketplace.

This move is being fueled by rapid technological changes which, in the future, are destined to change in size, speed and complexity. Outsourcing of goods, products and services opens new doors of opportunity for resourceful individuals. This enables them to enjoy multiple streams of income!

Add Value To Yourself

The best way to avoid the sting and stench of being fired or laid off is to create, or course, your own job or security blanket. You already have the tools, all the necessary resources to create your own opportunity. If self-employment is beyond your scope, then consider becoming a peak performer by adding value where you work; make this a top priority. Become value-proof, that is, become so valuable that catastrophic and irreplaceable losses would occur if you were ever separated from the company.

Peak performers or high value employees need not worry about layoffs. Generally speaking, people who add value to a company’s bottom line are usually well-regarded and also well-rewarded. Protect and enhance your future by becoming too valuable for the lay-off pool!

Keep in mind that high value people or peak performers always have options unavailable to the rank and file. They can always hire themselves! Which is exactly what I did!
And, I must add, it’s the best job I’ve ever had! I followed the advice of a Tennessee community college president who once declared; “the best job you will ever have is the one you create for yourself.”

Now, that ain’t nothing but the truth!

Franchise Ownership Viable Option for Black Americans According to Leading Expert

Franchise Ownership Viable Option for Black Americans According to Leading Expert
Franchise ownership viable option for Black Americans: (PRLEAP.COM) Franchise ownership viable option for Black Americans ------- Franchise Business Ownership is a viable business option that Black Americans should consider in today’s business climate. The failure rate for small business start is usually very high due to a number of dynamics that we will explore in another column of Black Star News. Franchising often provides years of experience, a proven way of doing business, increased visibility, reduction of advertising cost, etc. I had the pleasure of running a franchise start up for well over ten years; the franchise was called the “Haircut Hut Barber Shop Franchise”. --------- Franchising is based on the theory of creating a prototype of what works, and duplicating the results of your laboratory experience. Franchising is a great way to leverage and existing brand, and benefit from years of experience of franchise. You should look up the International Association of Franchises and research a franchises business history before leaping into a new venture. A call to the better business bureau should also be made, before you leap into a new venture. -------- Franchises still need business commitment, determination, hard work, community involvement, good employees, cash flow, cash management, etc. Franchising looks attractive to everyone, even though some fail to make it. The rate of failure is below statistics of most small business start-up. When I was the owner of the Haircut Hut Barbershop Franchise we started with one store in Hempstead, Long Island, and then went on to open a store in Roosevelt, LI, Uniondale, LI, Jamaica Queens, and Brooklyn. -------- I am no longer in the franchise business currently, but I am willing to venture into this area again. The benefits of Franchising very often outweigh the cost of opening an untried venture. “Thumbs Up” to Golden Krust Bakery for its recent achievements in expanding its new franchise locations across America. Black Americans can start and develop their very own franchises. The business concept in America is to build value and to make a profit. Most Black Americans currently work within systems in their current area of employment, so why not consider developing a business concept with a system of your own. --------- To list your Business Events in Black Star News or request to feature a business article in Black Star News Email: Phil Andrews at cbbookspr@aol.com.
